Art Wall Calendar

Charley Harper (American, 1922-2007) loved animals and nature but was quick to remind folks that he was an artist, not a naturalist: I think flat, simple, and funny. In a style he called minimal realism, Harper used geometric shapes, patterns, and vivid colors to simplify natures complexities and bring out each critters personality. With the cheeky tail end of a deer or the chubby cheeks of a squirrel snacking at a birdfeeder, Harpers artwork makes viewers smile. In the 1960s, Harper illustrated two books that would become childrens classics: The Giant Golden Book of Biology and The Animal Kingdom. A lifelong conservationist, he went on to design posters for the National Park Service, the National Audubon Society, The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and other organizations. An updated version of Harpers 1994 book, Beguiled by the Wild, is also published by Pomegranate (2016). View the Interior Details Twelve monthly grids and full-color artwork. From childhood on, Charley Harper loved nature and art. With a twinkling eye, a knack for draftsmanship, and an art degree from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Harper developed a simplified, playful style of illustrating birds, bugs, plants, and animals. By the time I had illustrated The Golden Book of Biology and The Animal Kingdom . . . I knew what I wanted to be when I grew upa wildlife artist. Harper (American, 19222007) painted everything from ladybugs in his own backyard to humpback whales in the Atlantic Ocean. Coloring Wall Calendar

Charley Harpers artistic life was all about shape and color. From his early days on a West Virginia farm through his career as a mid-century modernist, Harper (1922-2007) understood the power of black lines in art. He never owned or used a computer to draw! Many of Harpers most complex images were created between the late 1970's and the beginning of this century. Some pictured entire ecosystems rather than individual creatures or several creatures interacting. These massive images, especially the ten huge paintings commissioned by the National Park Service that required a year each to paint, are marriages of clever design and stunning colors. These images, along with others created for national monuments, nature centers, birding centers, zoos, parks, and an international bio preserve, are sure to offer an escape into Harpers natural world. Have fun coloring all year! View the Interior Details Size: 12 x 12 inches - Wire-O-Bound inches - Published by Pomegranate ISBN 978-0-7649-7717-6

Engagement Calendar - Diary

Charley Harper (American, 1922-2007) left his familys West Virginia farm in 1940 to enroll in the Art Academy of Cincinnati. His studies were interrupted by service in World War II, after which he attended the Art Students League of New York for a year. In 1947 he married fellow artist and Art Academy graduate Edie McKee and began a six-month honeymoon trip through America, during which he struggled to find his artistic voice. The Harper's son, Brett, also an artist, relates that, at the Grand Canyon, [Charley] realized that he could never capture the immensity of the natural wonder via realism. He just had to simplify what he saw. The result is what he called minimal realism. In addition to some four hundred illustrations for Ford Times magazine, Harper created clean-lined, sophisticated artwork featured on posters for the National Park Service, the Audubon Society, and many other conservation organizations; and in several books, including Harper Ever After: The Early Work of Charley and Edie Harper (2015) and Beguiled by the Wild, updated by Pomegranate in 2016. 120 pages, Soft cover with flaps and Wire-O binding.
