Author Bio: The Appleton Historical
Society was formed in 2010 to preserve the
history of Appletons industry, business, and
people. The society regularly hosts events to
bring the citys history to the public for
their enjoyment. Gwen Sargeant led the
committee to create a community-inspired
book. Images of America: Appleton contains
photographs from the Appleton Historical
Society, Lawrence University, the History
Museum at the Castle, and the private
collections of many Appleton natives.
Appletons rich beginnings found their source
at Lawrence Institute, the university in the
woods, on the Fox River. Rev. Henry Colman
and Rev. William Sampson chose the bluff on
the river for the site of the institute. Amos
A. Lawrence donated $10,000, and the building
began in July 1848. It was with axe and hook
that the first settlers cleared the land for
Lawrence and Appleton. The city was made up
of three villages: Martin (Grand Chute),
Appleton, and Lawesburg. In 1857, the
villages joined together to form the city of
Appleton. Amos Story was the citys first
mayor. Appletons industry grew on the banks
of the Fox River, including hydroelectricity

Art Wall Calendar
Charley Harper (American, 1922-2007) loved
animals and nature but was quick to remind
folks that he was an artist, not a
naturalist: "I think flat, simple, and
funny." In a style he called "minimal
realism," Harper used geometric shapes,
patterns, and vivid colors to simplify
nature's complexities and bring out each
critter's personality. With the cheeky tail
end of a deer or the chubby cheeks of a
squirrel snacking at a birdfeeder, Harper's
artwork makes viewers smile.
In the 1960s, Harper illustrated two books
that would become childrens classics: The
Giant Golden Book of Biology and The Animal
Kingdom. A lifelong conservationist, he went
on to design posters for the National Park
Service, the National Audubon Society, The
Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and other
organizations. An updated version of
Harpers 1994 book, Beguiled by the
