Since 1997 these delightful bird nutcrackers have been issued in limited quantities
during Ulbricht's U.S. signing tour. A handful of shops are selected each year to
host a signing event with Gunther Ulbricht.
2022 will mark the twenty-fourth consecutive bird design to be released in this series
having missed the past two years due to the Worldwide Covid Pandemic. Both U.S. Tours
were cancelled in 2020-2021 Despite his absence, Gunther Ulbricht has already released
images of a "Cracking Bird" for 2022 - See the Barn Owl below...
This all began with the "Woodpecker" in 1997, an actual replica of a 1933 nutcracker,
originally made by Otto Ulbricht, Gunther's grandfather. He created the
Cracking Bird to commemorate the birth of his son Christian Ulbricht that year.
These delightful miniature bird nutcrackers are highly sought after and typically sell
out during the signing events, perhaps because they are not as seasonal and look
great sitting on display throughout the year.
Below you'll find that we have a few of the older Tour Birds from previous years that
are still available. The 2022 Bird is a Barn Owl, while the 2019 Bird was a Belted Kingfisher.

Ulbricht Tour Bird Nutcracker
This is NOT this year's Tour Bird but a early view of the
2022 Tour Bird! This Barn Owl will become the twenty-fourth
addition to this series of annual tour "cracking birds" that
the Ulbricht firm has created. The series started in 1997
and has been release each year except in 2020 and 2021 due to
the Covid pandemic. (No Tour....No Bird!)
Typically this tour bird nutcracker is released in
conjunction with a visit from Gunther Ulbricht to our shop
in November but sadly he will not be touring across the
United States to visit with collectors this year.
